Girl Reading

Reading

Intermediate Reading

This course will focus on improving students’ reading comprehension, vocabulary skills, and word knowledge.  Students will learn reading strategies to help build their metacognitive skills. The course will include two novels and a literature study of these novels.


Enhanced Reading

This course will prepare students to read more challenging texts and will work on building students’ critical reading skills. Students will also learn challenging vocabulary words aimed to increase their vocabulary development. The course will include three novels, journaling, and a literature study.


PSAT/ Advanced Reading

This course will prepare students to think more critically by analyzing non-fiction and fiction texts. Students will respond to these texts through writing, journaling, and dialogue. Students will also deepen their awareness of vocabulary by studying challenging words and analyzing these words. The course will include four novels and detailed study of these novels.

Writing

Intermediate Writing/ Enhanced Writing

All students who seek to attend college in this country must first seek to develop proficient to advanced writing abilities. In this summer session, students will prepare both for the SAT Writing portion specifically, and for all academic writing assignments overall. The course will teach students both to identify and to improve errors in writing. The course will also teach students to refine their own writing skills and habits. Students will first strive toward clear writing in the form of single sentence mastery; they will then strive for forceful writing through application of foundational conventions of English grammar; they will complete the session with repeated practice in responding to SAT Essay prompts. This Enhanced Writing course requires students to exhibit hard work, full effort, and sincere dedication. In order to get the most out of this class, you must attend all sessions and complete all assignments to the best of your abilities—no excuses!

Math

Algebra I

This is a first year algebra course in which you will learn to reason symbolically. The key content involves writing, solving, and graphing linear and quadratic equations, including systems of two linear equations in two unknowns. Quadratic equations are solved by factoring, completing the square, graphically, or by application of the quadratic formula. The course also includes study of monomial and polynomial expressions, inequalities, exponents, functions, rational expressions, ratio, and proportion. Algebraic skills are applied in a wide variety of problem-solving situations.


Algebra II

Building on their work with linear, quadratic, and exponential functions, students extend their repertoire of functions to include polynomial, rational, and radical functions. Students work closely with the expressions that define the functions, and continue to expand and hone their abilities to model situations and to solve equations, including solving quadratic equations over the set of complex numbers and solving exponential equations using the properties of logarithms. Additional topics studied include graphing, analyzing, and interpreting functions; systems of linear equations and inequalities; matrices; conic sections; exponents and radicals; sequences and series; probability and statistics; trigonometric ratios and functions.


Geometry

Course will follow common course standards, with emphasis on plane figures such as the triangle, quadrilateral, and circle. Sample topics that will be covered will be similarity with plane figures, solving right triangles using various methods including right triangle trigonometry, finding area of plane figures using various techniques, circles, and working with three-dimensional figures, with concentration on surface area and volume. Coordinate geometry will also be utilized in problem solving at different points in the course


Pre-calculus

This program is designed to prepare our students for taking and succeeding at Pre-calculus in high school. Since Pre-calculus classes vary greatly by the instructor, the most essential topics will be our focus. After a few weeks addressing common side topics, like manipulating functions, shifting graphs, composition of functions, inverses, symmetries, and using exponential and logarithmic functions, focus will shift to trigonometry. The trigonometric portion of the course will emphasize solving right triangles and non-right triangles, using radians, key values in the unit circle, graphs of the sine and cosine function, and critical identities. A scientific calculator will be required for some topics. A graphic calculator like the TI-84 is recommended.


AP Calculus

The AP Calculus course will lay the foundation for students to succeed in Calculus AB or provide the necessary background to enter into a Calculus BC course. The course will begin with limits and continuity to pave the way for discussion about the derivative graphically and algebraically. Most of our time will be focused on understanding how to compute and utilize the derivative to explain the behavior of functions and for modeling and comprehending real world situations, especially as they pertain to the AP curriculum. Students should be prepared to use their knowledge of basic pre-calculus topics such as graphs of common functions, standard well-known trigonometric values, and finding the zeroes of an equation.
